The annual festival was originally a trading event where mahouts would gather to trade elephants but has now developed into Thailand's largest tourist event, attracting hundreds of thousands of local and international visitors. Thailand, 2011. Adam Oswell / We Animals</image:title><image:caption>Thailand is heavily dependent upon tourism, which made up over 20% of the country’s GDP in 2019. Thailand’s elephants have been a major tourist attraction for decades, as well as an important part of the country’s cultural heritage. The sudden collapse of the tourist industry due to COVID-19 resulted in hundreds of elephants and their owners (mahouts) being suddenly made redundant and subsequently forced to return to their home villages to rethink their future.

The Thai tourist industry has had a profound effect on wild elephant populations in Asia. The modern elephant tourism model introduced huge demand for both live elephants and elephant products and derivatives such as skin and ivory. As young calves, wild caught elephants are separated from their herd during capture and their mothers are often killed defending them. Capture pits are also used but usually result in injuries and death for the elephants. The captured calves then have their wild spirit broken through a brutal violent process and are then forced on to surrogate mothers and laundered into domestic populations through legal loopholes. This has traditionally been the common method of sourcing live elephants to boost domestic populations in Thailand and most of Asia. Once working, their compliance is maintained by regular jabs and cuts to the head from a bull- hook, leaving revelatory scars and psychological damage for the rest of their lives.

Since 2016, a disturbing new element has also emerged in the trading of elephant skin to supply demand in booming Chinese markets. In Asia, where around 50,000 wild elephants remain scattered across 13 countries, the biggest threat to elephant survival has historically been habitat loss. In Thailand and Myanmar, already dense human populations continue to expand into elephant habitat forcing the pachyderms into smaller disconnected fragments of forest which often leads to human-elephant conflict that can precipitate in elephant killings. </image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://veganpoetry.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/vegan-poetry-holiday-animal-cruelty.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Macaque on display in a cage at Intan Sari Luwak, a Civet coffee garden near Tanah Lot, Bali, Indonesia Intan Sari Luwak Coffee Garden, Bali, Indonesia, 2019. The most intensive production occurs in Lombardy's Brescia province, which has more than 2,200 pig farms.

These farms supply products under the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) label, a European Union food labeling designation intended to protect names and traditions of high-quality European foods made according to traditional methods within a defined geographic region. Despite the 60 pages of specifications for the Italian Parma Ham PDO, there are minimal directives for pigs' well-being, stating only: "Breeding facilities and equipment shall ensure animal welfare."

About 90 percent of Italy's pigs are raised in intensive, unsanitary conditions resulting in wounds, diseases, and the cannibalization of the weakest animals. Sightings of dead and dying animals inside these facilities are commonplace. Starting in August 2023, Lombardy faced its worst African Swine Fever outbreak since the 1960s, resulting in the mass culling of many of the region's pigs.

Sows are artificially inseminated and spend most of their lives inside restrictive gestation and farrowing crates, where they live for most of their nearly four-month-long pregnancies. This is followed by five weeks inside a farrowing crate to birth and nurse their piglets. This cycle occurs twice annually until the sows are slaughtered to become secondary-quality meat products, usually at two to three years of age.

Piglets are separated from their mothers at four weeks of age and then moved to crowded fattening pens at ten weeks where they remain until slaughter, occurring between six to 14 months of age.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://veganpoetry.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/vegan-poetry-better-welfare-meat-animal-abuse.jpg</image:loc><image:title>vegan-poetry-better-welfare-meat-animal-abuse</image:title><image:caption>Credit: Pexels</image:caption></image:image><lastmod>2024-06-01T20:17:16+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq>

<loc>https://veganpoetry.com/2024/04/11/which-animals-do-you-connect-with/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://veganpoetry.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/pexels-photo-1677794.jpeg</image:loc><image:title>person holding peppa pig toy marble</image:title><image:caption>Photo by Chris F on <a href="https://www.pexels.com/photo/person-holding-peppa-pig-toy-marble-1677794/" rel="nofollow">Pexels.com</a></image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://veganpoetry.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/pexels-photo-1194196.jpeg</image:loc><image:title>grayscale photo of man thinking in front of analog wall clock</image:title><image:caption>Photo by Brett Sayles on <a href="https://www.pexels.com/photo/grayscale-photo-of-man-thinking-in-front-of-analog-wall-clock-1194196/" rel="nofollow">Pexels.com</a></image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://veganpoetry.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/pexels-photo-819635.jpeg</image:loc><image:title>man in black hoodie sitting on bench near green trees</image:title><image:caption>Photo by Chinmay Singh on <a href="https://www.pexels.com/photo/man-in-black-hoodie-sitting-on-bench-near-green-trees-819635/" rel="nofollow">Pexels.com</a></image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://veganpoetry.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/pexels-photo-1210005.jpeg</image:loc><image:title>photo of boy drinking glass of milk</image:title><image:caption>Photo by Samer Daboul on <a href="https://www.pexels.com/photo/photo-of-boy-drinking-glass-of-milk-1210005/" rel="nofollow">Pexels.com</a></image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://veganpoetry.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/pexels-photo-929384.jpeg</image:loc><image:title>black bird on top of brown driftwood</image:title><image:caption>Photo by Chris LeBoutillier on <a href="https://www.pexels.com/photo/black-bird-on-top-of-brown-driftwood-929384/" rel="nofollow">Pexels.com</a></image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://veganpoetry.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/pexels-photo-20883958.jpeg</image:loc><image:title>a woman reading a book on a sofa</image:title><image:caption>Photo by Vitaly Gariev on <a href="https://www.pexels.com/photo/a-woman-reading-a-book-on-a-sofa-20883958/" rel="nofollow">Pexels.com</a></image:caption></image:image><lastmod>2024-06-03T11:58:59+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq>

<loc>https://veganpoetry.com/blog/</loc><lastmod>2024-05-31T16:01:11+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>0.6</priority>

<loc>https://veganpoetry.com/2024/05/21/uk-live-exports-ban/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://veganpoetry.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/wam30764.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Cattle destined for slaughter in the Middle East look down from an open-sided deck on the Mawashi Express, a massive farmed animal carrier ship capable of transporting thousands of live animals in a single voyage. The ship is en route between South America and Turkiye, a journey of at least 24 to 30 days. Millions of live animals are shipped annually across oceans in this way. Mindelo, Cape Verde, 2023. Stefano Belacchi / We Animals Media</image:title><image:caption>In early 2023, the 195-metre-long livestock carrier ship Mawashi Express, managed by Jordanian meat supplier Hijazi & Ghosheh Co., stopped for two days in Mindelo, Cape Verde, some 570 km west of the African coastline. According to marine vessel tracking data, this massive ship had stopped in Uruguay, Argentina and Rio Grande, Brazil, en route to Iskenderun, Turkiye. On this voyage, our photojournalist calculated that the vessel carried an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 live cattle, who stood in crowded pens distributed over eight enormous decks open to the elements. Other comparably sized farmed animal carriers can carry 80,000 sheep or 15,000 cattle. This journey of some 13,000 km from Rio Grande to Iskenderun lasts 24 to 30 days under good weather conditions. When the ship docked in Mindelo, the route's halfway point, the cattle had been at sea for 16 days.

In recent years, increased demand for meat and dairy products in water-stressed Middle Eastern countries has led to a surge in cattle and sheep importation. Animals are shipped live and slaughtered at their destination to ensure they are “freshly killed” before their meat is consumed. According to a United States Department of Agriculture report, as of 2018, Brazil became the world's largest producer of halal meat. In 2017, Brazil and Uruguay together shipped more than 500,000 live cattle across the ocean to Turkiye alone.

Animal mortalities and welfare at sea on these ships receive little to no oversight. Reports in recent years of severe animal suffering and deaths on board live export ships have led some countries, such as New Zealand, to ban the practice. The temperature in Mindelo that day neared 30 degrees Celsius. While cattle on the decks are visible and have access to fresher air, it is unknown how the cattle in the deeper reaches of the vessel fared in the warm temperature.

According to the International Marine Organization (IMO), cattle and sheep that die at sea are considered “spoiled cargo.” Their bodies and untreated manure may be dumped at sea. It was evident from the condition of the sides of the Mawashi Express that sewage had already been dumped from the ship.</image:caption></image:image><lastmod>2024-05-31T15:52:49+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq>

<loc>https://veganpoetry.com/2024/05/22/cctv-in-slaughterhouses-wales/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://veganpoetry.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/pexels-photo-430208.jpeg</image:loc><image:title>two gray bullet security cameras</image:title><image:caption>Photo by Scott Webb on <a href="https://www.pexels.com/photo/two-gray-bullet-security-cameras-430208/" rel="nofollow">Pexels.com</a></image:caption></image:image><lastmod>2024-05-31T15:52:05+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq>

<loc>https://veganpoetry.com/2024/05/31/bullfighting-dying-south-america/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://veganpoetry.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/pexels-photo-14643470.jpeg</image:loc><image:title>bullfighting in spain</image:title><image:caption>Photo by Yoan Martu00ednez Diaz on <a href="https://www.pexels.com/photo/bullfighting-in-spain-14643470/" rel="nofollow">Pexels.com</a></image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://veganpoetry.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/pexels-photo-7617555.jpeg</image:loc><image:title>a person holding a red cloth</image:title><image:caption>Photo by Virgilio Noguera on <a href="https://www.pexels.com/photo/a-person-holding-a-red-cloth-7617555/" rel="nofollow">Pexels.com</a></image:caption></image:image><lastmod>2024-05-31T14:10:17+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq>

<loc>https://veganpoetry.com/2024/03/18/murky-marketing-the-meat-industry/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://veganpoetry.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/vegan-poetry-meat-marketing-cow.jpg</image:loc><image:title>vegan-poetry-dairy-calf-meat-industry-marketing</image:title><image:caption>If the dairy industry showed footage of babies forcibly separated from their mothers, fewer people would buy milk.
