The week’s plant-based food news in the UK was dominated by two main stories: plates and plants.

Plates: Vegan fine dining

The UK media love to skewer plant-based brands for their failures. So, it was refreshing to see the Michelin-star success of a plant-based restaurant splashed across news outlets this week.

Plates, a fancy London eatery that opened in July 2024, this week became the first plant-based restaurant in the UK to earn a Michelin star, breaking down another barrier to perceptions around cruelty-free food.

The restaurant is run by siblings Kirk and Keeley Haworth. Diners can choose from its seven- and eight-course tasting menus that feature fresh plant-based dishes like kabocha squash & ginger soup and mung & urad bean lasagna with miso and chive sauce. See the menu here.

Plants: “A new plant-based powerhouse”

In another pick-me-up story in the plant-based food market, Ella Mills, founder of Deliciously Ella, bought Allplants brand out of administration.

Allplants, popular for its vegan home delivery meals, entered administration in November 2024 after facing financial difficulties.

Now, Ella Mills has acquired the brand. “We will bring together Plants and Allplants to create something truly special – a new, natural, plant-based powerhouse,” Mills told The Grocer, which broke the story.

In recent years, Plants has expanded into supermarkets. It sells a range of healthy products from burgers and pasta to sauces and frozen meals. ★
